It is named after legendary former American Football coach, Vince Lombardi.

Lombardi is most famous for coaching the Green Bay Packers NFL team. Amongst other successes, in 1966 and 1967 he led the Packers to glory, winning the first two Super Bowls ever held.

Since first being awarded in 1967, each year the trophy is hand crafted by the luxury jewelry and silverware company Tiffany & Co.
