Answer: In 2010 on season 7 of the X Factor UK, One Direction made it all the way to the final weekend but ended up only finishing third.

Despite the bands massive worldwide success since then, while the boys were competing on the X Factor live shows they failed to win the most public votes on any week.

In fact according to the voting statistics, One Directions best finish on any given week was 3rd.

The winner of the X Factor that year was Matt Cardle who has only experienced moderate success since then, getting dropped by Simon Cowell’s record label Syco. In second place was the slightly more successful female singer, Rebecca Ferguson.
